Sh*t breaks. VPS gets suspended, Coburn rages.
tl;dr version: VPS gets killed, I rage.
VPS Hosts have the dumbest of reasons to suspend VPS accounts. I mean, I’ve been using my VPS to run an IRC Network and also testing grounds for a new project. Our VPS, perrine.coburndomain.net, was frozen in ice this morning because it apparently was ‘spamming’. The one that I’m pointing the gun at, Exigent, the company that the VPS is hosted with gave a really blunt reason, quote:
Sending out SPAM.
Coburn’s Domain gives a CloudFlare test run, supercharges the ‘domain
At first, I thought CloudFlare was some gimmick. I had to check it out to see if was actually legit or not. One night, after watching a short 3 and a half minute video explaining how CloudFlare worked, I was intrigued to see how CloudFlare could improve Coburn’s Domain in terms of performance and speed.
We’re back to normal.
We’ve resumed our normal operations, thanks to Obama killing SOPA for now (according to this Forbes article). While we were going to protest along with other sites like reddit, since this news has surfaced, we’ve called our protest against SOPA off.
SOPA is dead, but who knows what might happen yet – the debate (in the US) is still on the table, and we’ll keep you posted on any updates.
January 18th: Coburn’s Domain Blackout Edition
Simply put: On January 18th, from 8am to 8pm EST (US Time), Coburn’s Domain will be blacked out. Or censored, if you like. This will only last for the specified time frame, and we’ll be back after the time frame has passed.
Even though I (Coburn) am a Australian, when the Stop Online Piracy Act was announced, I knew that if that act was introduced into the online world, that the internet would be doomed.
Merry Xmas from the Coburn’s Domain crew!
As I write this, I’m half-perked on Pepsi and feeling a little blue after eating too much chicken, on behalf of all the Coburn’s Domain staff team, I wish you a Merry Christmas.
Also, we’ve turned two! That’s right, Coburn’s Domain is 2 years old. It was 2009 when it entered the battlefield on the internet from it’s protected beta form, and I didn’t know what it would be up against. 2 years on and we’re not dead. Sure, we might have a small userbase, but that’s one of the things that makes us unique.
Plugin & Site Updates
No site is ever bug-free, and regular maintenance is a must to keep systems running at peak performance. We’ve identified a few problems and addressed them as follows:
Firstly, we had 2 spambots pass through the registration page on the website. Since we mail you a password upon registration, those bots didn’t have time to strike. We’ve installed a plugin to monitor the situation, and it should be rather effective.
Coburn’s Domain Launches our own Team Fortress 2 Server!
If you don’t check the founder’s twitter (@coburn64), you may not have known that a Team Fortress 2 Server was quietly on the to-do list. Well, we’ve made this possible, harnessing the power of a old laptop* that we had kicking around in the storage room.
At the moment, we have capacity for just 6 players, which is ideal for 3v3 matches. As we get more bandwidth, we’ll expand to a maximum of 12 players (hopefully).
Coburn’s Domain launches Nintendo 3DS Hacking Wiki; let’s hack that Nintendo 3DS
The Nintendo 3DS Hacking Wiki is a wiki deciated to portable freedom on the recently released Nintendo 3DS. By portable freedom, we mean, custom software (also known as homebrew) running on the 3DS, such as console emulation, movie players, system software mods and 3DS Linux, just to name a few.
The 3DS Hacking Wiki can be found here, at http://3ds.coburndomain.net. Of course, it’ll be a slow start, but if we all pitch in and help out, before we know it, we’ll have homebrew running on our 3DS consoles. See you there!
