China: Wait, what? Apple iPhone branded gas stoves?
China is always known to ripoff products which often infringe on the intellectual property of other companies. This time though, they’ve slapped a Apple logo onto the front of a gas stove – yes, a gas stove – to make the product more appealing to Apple fans.
In the city of Wuhan, police have seized 681 Apple iPhone-branded gas stoves. What’s even better is that the stoves have “Apple China Limited” stamped as the manufacturer of the stove, just to make it look like Apple has entered the stove market.
Raspberry Pi Update: Almost there, root filesystem up for download
The Raspberry Pi is almost ready for public release, and we’re predicting that it’ll sell like hot cakes. And yes, Coburn’s Domain is hopefully going to be one of the first to get a hands-on with the public-release version of the Raspberry Pi.
The ‘Pi blog has just announced download links for the Debian “reference” file system, which allows people to tinker with the Raspberry Pi and it’s multimedia abilities.
Coburn’s Domain gives a CloudFlare test run, supercharges the ‘domain
At first, I thought CloudFlare was some gimmick. I had to check it out to see if was actually legit or not. One night, after watching a short 3 and a half minute video explaining how CloudFlare worked, I was intrigued to see how CloudFlare could improve Coburn’s Domain in terms of performance and speed.
Samsung Galaxy Tab gets the Ice Cream Sandwich love by the TE4M…
A brave group of developers from the XDA-Developers forums have ported a version of Android 4.0.3, Ice Cream Sandwich to the original Samsung Galaxy Tab (model P1000). This port provides a quality working ICS ROM that is suitable enough to replace the stock ROM that the Galaxy Tab ships with.
Basic features work flawlessly, but a few of the luxuries like camera are broken (you can use the viewfinder, but picture taking & video recording are no-go). Still, it is excellent to see Ice Cream Sandwich grace a older-generation device with decent hardware even in today’s standards.
Raspberry Pi Update: What can and can’t the GPU decode?
As the Raspberry Pi boards are being manufactured in China, a Raspberry Pi website article provides an insight as to what the GPU will assist decoding with. So, if you want a $25/$35 (depending on model) Media Box, this should interest you.
At the R-Pi’s launch, two major licensed codecs called MPEG4 and H264 will be made available, due to the cost of codec licensing. There are other codecs that aren’t licensed, such as Video Codec 1, MPEG2, etc but the R-Pi team have decided not to GPU accelerate them (in a setup like DXVA on Windows) at this moment in time.
Look out Apple iPhone 4S, the Raspberry Pi will kick it out of the hot seat
Let’s face it – Apple sometimes likes to boast about it’s products hardware being the fastest in the class. While it might seem true to some extent depending on what you use the iDevices for, the founding member of Raspberry Pi, Eben Upton, has stated that the Raspberry Pi should provide at least twice the performance of an iPhone 4S in a wide range of activities. Eben also throws nVidia’s Tegra mobile chip out the window.
Raspberry Pi Update: Almost ready for launch; Kernel sources posted
As the Raspberry Pi nears it’s final stages before becoming available for sale to the public, we thought we’d give you a quick update on their progress. As stated in this post on the Raspberry Pi blog, the linux kernel that the Raspberry Pi team is deploying version 3.1.9 with Raspberry Pi-specific patches applied. Linux developers may be interested to check out the Raspberry Pi kernel github, however if you don’t know what a kernel is or know how to compile a kernel, then it’s not for the faint-hearted.
Down Down, MegaUpload is down… and Anon strikes back!
MegaUpload has just fallen off the digital landscape, with 4 people arrested and 7 charged with conspiracy by the FBI. The people include Dotcom, Ortmann, chief marketing officer Finn Batao and developer Bram van der Kolk who are currently in New Zealand under custody. The FBI also worked with various country authorities such as New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, the UK and the Phillipines.
January 18th: Coburn’s Domain Blackout Edition
Simply put: On January 18th, from 8am to 8pm EST (US Time), Coburn’s Domain will be blacked out. Or censored, if you like. This will only last for the specified time frame, and we’ll be back after the time frame has passed.
Even though I (Coburn) am a Australian, when the Stop Online Piracy Act was announced, I knew that if that act was introduced into the online world, that the internet would be doomed.
Mario Adventure: a SMB3 ROM Hack that you won’t forget
Excuse the retroness, but while talking on IRC, I stumbled across a ROM hack that, in short terms, makes Super Mario Bros 3 ten times more challenging and fun.
With new powers like Fire Fire Mario, Invisible Mario, Magic Mario and Kuribo Mario, weather effects that effect game play (snow makes things slippery, for example) and brand new levels, this is the ROM hack that any hardcore Mario player should sink their teeth into.
