Microsoft Security Essentials earns a VB100 award
Microsoft, the creator of the Microsoft Windows operating system, has been awarded with a Virus Bulletin 100% award for it’s free security software package, called “Microsoft Security Essentials”. While big-name security products such as Norton, Kaspersky and Trend Micro slipped up on the VB100 tests, Microsoft Security Essentials took the cake, earning a comment from the VB100 testers, as quoted below:
Detection rates were strong as ever…with no problems in the WildList or clean sets, Microsoft earns another VB100 award with ease.
According to Microsoft, it is estimated that 80% of all Windows computers have security software installed, but in reality, 50% don’t have a form of security software installed, or security software is installed but not up to date. In the VB100 Test, Microsoft Security Essentials successfully detected 100% of all the “In-The-Wild” malware and virus samples, without any false positives (which are innocent files that aren’t actually viruses, yet the software thinks it is a threat). This in turn, allowed Virus Bulletin to award the security software package with an August 2010 VB100 award.
